ISSS was founded as a professional society to promote smart materials and systems technologies. Very soon, it became natural that it considers microsystems technology too. Thus, small and smart systems became the focus for ISSS in the first decade of this century. When a newsletter was contemplated for ISSS in the middle of 2006, a suggestion came for it naturally—Sukshma. This Sanskrit word stands for small and subtle. It thus encompasses the two basic tenets of ISSS, micro and smart. The first issue of Sukshma was released in October 2006 under the guidance of the erstwhile President of ISSS, Prof. S. Mohan. His encouragement and support were remarkable. As he explains in the first issue, the mission of Sukshma is to increase awareness about ISSS in the academic, governmental, and industry circles. Sukshma was published as a quarterly for the next three years. There have been ups and downs since then. Between 2006-2009, Sukshma was the primary source for recording various activities of ISSS. Many ISSS members generously contributed to it during the time when national programmes on smart materials and micro and smart systems were active. It was the time when MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) technology took root in India even as the smart materials technology deepened its roots. Sukshma thus gave a voice to the community of researchers and students. Sukshma grew along with ISSS. At one time, Sukshma was also driving the ISSS activities because we needed something to write about! Let us hope that the adulthood of ISSS (which celebrated its silver jubilee last year) sees the resurgence of Sukshma. This hope alludes to the desire that ISSS becomes active once again.
